Southwest Montana's Local Attractions

Wildlife Photography

Southwest Montana is considered the last best place for many reasons, one of which is the opportunity to witness some of Mother Nature's most magnificent creatures in the wild. Elk, deer, and moose frequent the valley around the lodge, and if you're lucky you may spot a fox, wolves, or even a bear!

Big Hole Battlefield

A drive to the scenic upper Big Hole Valley through the fabled Montana ranch country is always a pleasurable day. In the town of Wisdom, you will discover a beautiful western art gallery. Just out of Wisdom, you can view a slide show (National Park Service) of the historic Battle of the Nez Perce Indians at the Chief Joseph battleground. The Nez Perce tribe was instrumental in guiding and feeding the Lewis and Clark Expedition during the last leg of their journey to the Pacific.

Bannack State Park/Ghost Town

A short drive from Wisdom will take you to Bannack, the former territorial capital of Montana. It is the best-preserved "ghost town" in the state and there is a wealth of western history to be learned there, including the tale of Sheriff Plummer and his gang of outlaws. On the way back to the lodge, you can drive through the magnificent Beaverhead National Forest and Pioneer Mountains and dig for crystals at an authorized location managed by the Forest Service.
